I’ve decided to make this apple week because it’s apple season. I actually don’t buy apples very often because I find them kind of bland and boring to eat on their own compared to other fruits. However, maybe I should stop neglecting the apple because it’s such a versatile food that goes great in everything from desserts to salads and sandwiches like this.
The combination of apples and cheese is truly delightful. If you have never eaten them together before, I highly recommend you remedy that situation asap. Putting apple in a grilled cheese sandwich sounds a bit odd but they do add a nice fresh and light sweetness that compliments the buttery cheese flavor. I recommend using a cheese that isn’t too harsh and that melts well. I used swiss cheese but I listed some other options in the recipe ingredients.
Grilled Apple & Cheese Sandwich
|Prep time||5 minutes|
|Cook time||5 minutes|
|Total time||10 minutes|
- white or wheat bread
- 1 ~1oz swiss, gruyere, havarti, mozzerella or provologne cheese (sliced)
- 1/2 apple (cut in thin slices)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
|1.||Preheat grill or pan over medium heat. Lightly brush outside facing slices of bread with olive oil. Stack apple slices and cheese on sandwich.|
|2.||Grill for a few minutes on each side. If the sandwich is thick, you may need to put a lid on the pan / over the grill to help the cheese melt, but only do this for a minute or so or the steam could make the bread soggy.|
