Grated Apple & Turkey Burgers

Here is another apple week post, because not all apples are pricey and require the help of geniuses to operate.  Rah ha.

This may not look like an apple dish at first glance, but it’s a turkey burger with grated apple in the meat.  While I like to use turkey burger as a hamburger substitute in many dishes, I’m typically not a huge fan of turkey burger patties themselves.  However, something about the grated apple really enhances the favor.  It doesn’t taste like apple, it just tastes like a better turkey burger. Try it and see for yourself!


The burger mix also contains thyme and mustard, and the burger is topped with caramelized onion.  Caramelizing takes a little time but the resulting semi-sweet onion ribbons are pretty unbeatable as far as burger toppings go.


And, of course, there is cheese.

Grated Apple & Turkey Burgers

Serves 4
Cook time 30 minutes


  • 1lb turkey burger
  • 1 apple (grated)
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 Large yellow onion (sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 3-4oz mozzarella or provologne cheese (sliced)
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • salt & pepper


1. Put butter in a saucepan over medium to medium low heat. Add sliced onions and some salt & pepper. Cook onions until caramelized, about 25 minutes.
2. After onions have been cooking for about 15 minutes, preheat grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Mix turkey burger, grated apple, mustard, thyme. Divide into 4 patties and add to grill. Flip after about 5 minutes, add cheese slices to burgers and cook for another 5 minutes.
3. Add patties to buns and top with onions.
